For a Well-Organized, Well-Planned Move!

Where do you start planning your move? Here's a checklist to help you get started.

1. SET YOUR MOVING DATE AND BOOK YOUR MOVER

It's a good idea to book a mover at least 8 weeks before your planned move. However, if you're moving during the peak season, in June or July, booking 10 to 12 weeks in advance is more than recommended.

And, most importantly, make sure your mover is insured!

2. MAKE YOUR BOXES

As a first step, 2 to 3 months before D-Day, clean out your closets and wardrobes. You can start by sorting out what you want to keep and what you intend to give away. This way, you'll avoid having to pack and transport many things that are ultimately useless to you. The fewer boxes you have to move, the lower your removal bill!

THEN START PACKING YOUR BOXES.

1. Start with out-of-season clothes, dishes, and anything else you only use occasionally.
2. Clothes from your wardrobe can be slipped into plastic bags on their hangers. Large, transparent recycling bags are a smart choice, as you can easily identify their contents when the time comes to unpack them.
3. To save boxes and time, leave your clothes in their drawers and wrap them in tight-fitting plastic film, thus eliminating any risk of damaging them.

Planning ahead not only avoids getting caught up in a mad whirlwind of last-minute packing, but also allows you to take the time to properly wrap fragile and valuable items, among others.

And... avoid packing everything you'll need until the big day!

3. ELECTRONIC CONNECTIONS

Plugging in our appliances, once in our new home, can cause headaches just thinking about it!

HERE'S A TIP:

Use your phone to take photos of all the connections, plugs, and wall sockets used to power your appliances before you unplug anything. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble and precious time when the time comes! This is also the time to clean and dust them before packing them up.

 4. CHANGE OF ADDRESS

We recommend that you change your address 30 days before you move.

Start by requesting a change of address on the Service Québécois de Changement d'Adresse (SQCA) website. By doing so, your change of address will be forwarded to 7 participating ministries and agencies.

It's essential to notify all the agencies, institutions, companies, and service providers with whom you do business:

• Canada Revenue Agency
• Electricity, gas, and heating oil suppliers
• Insurance company(ies) (life, home, and vehicle)
• Internet, telephone and cable providers
• Financial institutions
• Employer
• Family and friends
• Schools and educational institutions
• Doctors, dentists, and other health specialists
  
  At your discretion, you can request mail redirection from Canada Post. Additional assurance of receiving mail from senders you may have forgotten to notify.
  

5. CLEAN UP BEFORE YOU MOVE

It's a good idea to clean your future home before you move in, and to take advantage of the fact that it's empty to do so! Not only will it ensure that your new home is spotlessly clean, it will also allow you to relax fully after your long moving day.

If you want to save time and energy by calling in the services of professional cleaners, it's best to book your cleaning service 2 to 4 weeks in advance. And, of course, if you're moving in June or July, book as early as possible to ensure residential cleaning services.

It's also critical to make sure that the cleaning company is insured, and that the products used for the services include a disinfectant cleaner. If possible, plan to have your new home cleaned one to 2 days before you move in.

You'll see that, when properly organized, preparation, moving in and moving out will be easy and pleasant!
